Eligibility

Eligibility is mostly an administrative problem, and it is solved with documents, early.

Academic records

American associations review coursework and grades centrally before an athlete may compete at the upper divisions, and transcripts from outside the country usually need translation and evaluation. Canadian universities assess admission directly, with equivalencies that vary by province and by school.

Amateur status

Rules on prize money, agents and professional contracts differ between associations and change over time. Anything that looks like professional compensation should be checked against the current rules of the specific association before it is accepted, not afterwards.

Immigration

An international athlete needs the right permit or visa to study, and the rules on working while studying are separate again. Processing takes time, and a roster spot does not shorten it.

Language requirements

Programs set their own language-proficiency standards for applicants educated in another language. These are admission requirements, not athletic ones, and they are not negotiable through a coach.
